Bird's Nest

I found this hidden on my front porch.

Why is one egg white, and the others are blue?

That's what I told my son. It's just a guess. Could it be a cuckoo or something?

Cowbird? If so, that little sucker will push its adoptive sibes out of the nest once it hatches.

The white egg is now wrapped snug-ly in a fluffy towel, warmed by the heat from the kitchen stove's pilot light. And we'll see what transpires there as well as back in the nest.

Has anyone ever seen 2 cowbird eggs in the same robin's nest? It seems to me that some sort of"professional" courtesy would benefit Natural Selection, otherwise you'd have cowbirds crowding out other cowbirds.

And Roberta's essay about work and the "grasshopper/ant dichotomy" made me realize that it was time for a little "deus ex machina".
